We thought it was time to shine some light on our fabulous Media Buying team. Nelle Wilson, Media Planner & Buyer, is here to give us all the gossip and tell us a little bit more about her role at Net Natives.

Ok, let’s go…

So Nelle, let’s start with a bit about your background. What brought you to Net Natives?

I have always loved advertising. It has the ability to shape society, as well as make consumers laugh; it’s because of this that I love working in this industry. When I graduated with a 2:1 in Media and Communications from the University of Sussex, Net Natives saved me from the dismal reality of graduate unemployment, by offering me a job. I accepted a junior role in 2017 –  it was the best decision I have ever made.

Now you’re at Net Natives, what does your typical day look like?

The world of Media Buying is dynamic and always developing – which reflects my day.  My days can include four meetings and six publisher phone calls before I have even had time to check my emails.  Or, I could spend a whole day analysing campaign data and making recommendations for future activity. No two days look the same and this is why I enjoy my role so much, as it suits my spontaneous personality.

Can you tell us a little bit about what the role entails?

The art of media buying is reaching the most people, in the most cost-efficient way. We do this through developing and maintaining great relationships with the publishers we work with. As well as the social side to the role, there is also a lot of analytical skills required, which I think a lot of people don’t realise. Sometimes you have to let yourself get lost in numbers to identify trends and spot campaign patterns. This can sometimes be daunting but luckily we have an amazing manager to guide us through it.

Is there a part of your role that you find the most fulfilling?

For large campaigns, I can often spend a large amount of time on one single media plan.  There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a large plan being signed off and getting to see the campaign in action. It’s an extremely fulfilling moment knowing all your hard work has paid off to help an institution reach out and get more people into education.

Who are your heroes in marketing, advertising or education?

Diversity in the education sector is something I am very passionate about. I believe everyone deserves a chance at Higher Education, regardless of their background. Femi Bola MBE (who was speaking at an event I attended on diversity in the education sector), explained the socio-economic and racial challenges within the UK. She was really inspiring, spending the majority of her career fighting for inclusion within the education and employment sector. I hope my career can be similar to hers.

Do you have a ‘proudest moment’ in your career to date?

As a student, I wrote for The Tab and my debut story was in the top three most read articles for the month. Obviously, Journalism was not where I wanted to go, but I’m still proud of this!

What are you looking forward to achieving at Net Natives over the next couple of years?

I am looking forward to seeing the Media Buying team develop. When I first started we were a team of two. We are now leading the way in innovative media buying for the education sector. We have so much support from the company, and I can’t wait to see where we’ll go.

Before we finish this Q&A, can you give us an insight into what you get up to outside of work?

I like to read fantasy novels – anything that centres around magic or the supernatural. When I am with my friends I love a night out, ideally something with cocktails and dancing.

Is there something about yourself that no-one would guess?

I can disconnect my shoulders. But, after years of doing this as a party trick, my shoulder joints are now too loose and they now pop out at random times.

And finally, if you could describe yourself in three words, what would those words be?

Funny, inventive and charismatic.
